Assignment 5
1. The first article "Lightning strikes mobile home" was by the Sun Sentinel which gives Broward County news. In the article it describes how during a bad thunderstorm, a mobile home on Oakland Park Boulevard was struck by lightning and then caught on fire. The homeowner explains that this has been a worry for them but never actually thought it would happen. The problem in this article is that mobile homes are easily flammable which is extremely dangerous and absolutely frightening. The "who" for the problem is easily the mobile home owner because in a matter of seconds their entire house and everything they own could catch on fire. However the problem spreads bigger than that, to the neighbors and even the entire neighborhood. https://www.sun-sentinel.com/323c1ae2-41f2-4013-b645-21d358a13223-132.html
This second article "What's going on at Broward County 7-Elevens?" is quite disturbing for me, being a 7-Eleven customer. Health inspectors went to 7-Eleven and found quite revolting issues, the first being live roaches on the floor in the store by the chip rack, the second is that the bottom of the coffee containers had ants, "too numerous to count." The third violation was that the shelves underneath the icee machine had "fresh rodent excreta." Lastly, there was rodent excreta found on the shelf in front of the A/C unit. This story is so nauseating for me and this is a problem for not only the customers, but the employees and managers. https://www.local10.com/news/florida/broward/what-s-going-on-at-broward-county-7-elevens-
Third, I found an article called "Clock ticking as Butterfly World works to protect exotic insects and birds from Hurricane Dorian." Being the environmental gal that I am, this article really stuck out to me. This story explains that employees at butterfly world tried capturing more than 20,000 butterflies to keep them out of harms way during hurricane Dorian. Although they couldn’t capture all of the endangered and specialized species, they captured as much as they could. The problem in this story is that there are more endangered animals today than there ever has been in our world. In this situation the problem is really for the endangered species more than us however we still do have a problem because every single species on earth is important and add value into our environment in their own way. https://www.local10.com/weather/hurricane/clock-ticking-as-butterfly-world-works-to-protect-exotic-insects-and-birds-from-hurricane-dorian
Second to last, I found this article "Florida rapper sneaks into police station, films music video criticizing misconduct." This article talks about a local rapper posting a video on YouTube criticizing policeman misconduct. The rapper walks in to the police department dances around the lobbies and then goes into a room and dances while standing on one of the desks. At first I wasn’t sure what to think of this story but then it dawned on me, why is a random rapper Able to just walk into a police station and do this? The real problem here is with the police department. We rely on the police for our lives in some situations but the fact that a random person can walk into the please department and walk through the halls and into rooms without being questioned, is the real problem. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/crime/article234880812.html
Lastly, this article "Keowee Bridge opening delayed, should open before end of month, county says" I found a real good opportunity in. This article talks about a kind of basic story, a very important traffic heavy bridge opening being delayed. Now yes this is a very Basic story however I do see an opportunity here. Most Americans rely heavily on their car to get from place to place however with more Americans and no more space, traffic seems to be getting worse and building roads isn’t doing enough. The problem here is for the people, there is traffic and too much time spent in it. The problem here is also for the government because they are spending so much money trying to build new roads and bridges when it is not really addressing the real problem here, which is the lack of communal transportation. https://www.daytondailynews.com/news/local/keowee-bridge-opening-delayed-should-open-before-end-month-county-says/LFPKaqSZROvatNUErX60tL/
